Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) is a tool used in trauma therapy that helps the brain and body reprocess distressing and traumatic experiences that have caused a person to feel stuck and triggered when untreated.
When a traumatic event occurs, the associated images, feelings, and body sensations can get “stuck” in the brain long after the event has ended. Later, traumatized people may be triggered by other experiences and struggle to recognize they are not experiencing the original trauma.
If a person does not have the right tools or environment to work through and resolve the traumatic experience, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can develop. EMDR has been found to significantly either reduce or eliminate PTSD and associated symptoms.
